What is 3D Design?

3D design is the process of creating physical or digital 3D models of any artifact. Physically this can be achieved using blocks such as Lego or with some playdough and some sticks.

Digitally, this is done through special applications that are build for 3D design purposes. Tinkercad is one example of such software.

3D design shows kids the relationship between art and STEM. It allows them to use their imagination and think outside the box.

Some 3D design benefits

Creative thinking

3D design encourages kids to think outside the box and approach problems from different angles. The ability to design anything you can image is powerful

Visual based learning

Visual based learning is a different way to stimulate the mind. It’s an extra way to deliver learning which differes from the text based methods used in schools. Some kids respond better to visual learning

Real world application

Kids can design things with real-world application. Think of key chains, battery holders or even custom nuts and bolts. The beauty of this is through 3D printing they can hold their creation in their own hands

The activities

3D Models

  • 3D modelling things physically using blocks or playdough and sticks. This helps kids with coming up with an initial concept and see how it might work

Tinkercad

  • Tinkercad is an easy to use 3D modelling and design application. Kids can place, adjust and compine shapes to create complex designs

3D Printing

  • 3D printing is the process of layering a material based on a design to physically re-create that design. 3D designs created in Tinkercad can come to life through 3D printing
